Hi, I'm Annie Kubena, the painter behind seed and arrow.
My paintings live in the space between the microscope and the telescope. Cellular forms and cosmic ones, rendered in unexpected color that feels both earthy and interstellar. Look closely and it's a cell. Step back and it's a nebula.
Each piece starts as an original abstract painting on watercolor paper, made with watercolor, acrylic, latex paint, ink, and graphite. I let the water move the color and let the materials do the talking. I guide it, then get out of the way.
I work from my studio in Madison, Wisconsin. This practice began when I was a burned-out designer looking for space to play and let my muses speak. I wanted to reconnect with the artist in me who was alive in single-celled organisms beneath moss-covered rocks, long before shopping malls, roads, or the internet.
Here, I sell archival giclee prints on cotton watercolor stock in 8x10, 11x14, and 16x20, made for spaces with good bones and a mid-century point of view.

I hope the work gives you something new to notice each time you pass it, and reminds you that you're both tiny and powerful in the universe.
